The Grand Prix 2013

The Crucible Club hosted the annual Grand Prix snooker event on Sunday 24th March 2013. 26 Players entered the event which always throws up a few surprises due to the format of round robin group matches and black ball shoot outs!

Craig Marsh dominated Group 1 winning all his matches and posting a 66 break, qualifying alongside Phil Kenyon in his first Crucible Tournament. Group 2 was true to the form book with Scott Haynes and Kevin Holmes qualifying. Andy Vernon enjoyed success in Group 3 and qualified comfortably with Mark Head. James Dawes also qualified as a lucky loser.

Group 4 was all about Duane Puttock, beating both Neil Winkworth and Jason Francis and racing into the last 16. Jason posted a 52 break against Duane but that was still not enough to take the frame. Group 5 was very tight indeed with Dom Yates throwing up shock wins against Jonjo Sharkey and Dave Beakhouse. Neil Rampton won the group along side Jonjo, but it took a 3 way black ball shootout to separate Bimmer, Dave and Dom. Bimmer eventually coming through despite some premature celebrations!

Group 6 was the Group of Death and pitted Matt Ford, Ian Rose, Aaron Watts, Andy Bolter and Phil Simmons against each other. Matt Ford was undefeated and cruised through the group. Ian Rose qualified with wins over Aaron and Andy. Andy Bolter posted a 56 break again Aaron Watts but it wasn’t enough to qualify as Phil Simmons beat Ian Rose.

The last 16 knock out matches began with Ian Rose beating Bimmer. Craig Marsh overcame Jason Williams whilst Matt Ford cruised past James Dawes. Scott Haynes met Jonjo Sharkey can came from a frame behind to reach the quarter finals. Neil Winkworth defeated Reading league Champion Neil Rampton whilst last years Grand Prix Champion Andy Vernon fell to Phil Simmons.

The quarter finals saw Ian Rose take out Craig Marsh, whilst Matt Ford defeated the in form Duane Puttock. Scott Haynes beat Phil Simmons and in the match of the round, Kevin Holmes cleared the table to defeat Neil Winkworth.

Matt Ford was in fine form, defeating Ian rose in the first Semi Final, whilst Kevin Holmes was beaten by Scott Haynes. That set up the final between Scott and Matt.

The final was a one sided affair with Scott Haynes never really getting going. Matt Ford Cruised to a 2-0 victory, taking the title of Grand Prix Champion 2013.

The Pot Black Cup 2013

Sunday 17th February saw the Crucible club host the Annual Pot Black Cup for the Reading & District Snooker League. The prize was a frame against the snooker professional at this years reading & District League presentation evening. With all matches only 1 Frame the tournament was wide open for anyone to win!

31 Players entered the tournament and the last 32 saw some big match ups. Crucible Club Champion Karl Walker was defeated by the ever popular Neil Winkworth. Cris Ball nearly caused an upset against Craig Marsh, whilst Chris Rice got the better of Ian Rose. Jonjo Sharkey was beaten by 2012 Grand Prix Champion Andy Vernon, with Andy posting a break of 65. Duane Puttock fell to local legend Tony Powell, whilst Shaun Munday edged past Andy Bolter on the final Black. Jason Francis defeated Aaron Watts, while there were also first round victories for Jason Williams, Phil Simmons, Ollie Douglas, Andy Seymour, Scott Haynes, Dave Lugger, Martin Wallace, Tommy Jury and Neil Baker.

The last 16 pitted the 2012 Pot Black Champion Phil Simmons against Craig Marsh, with Craig running out the eventual winner. Ollie Douglas beat Andy Seymour and Martin Wallace overcame Tony Powell. The 2006 Pot Black Champion Neil Baker lost out to Neil Winkworth, whilst Scott Haynes ended the run of Dave Lugger. There were also victories for Chris Rice, Jason Francis and Andy Vernon.

The Quarter finals had some superb matches. Chris Rice defeated Craig March, producing a double on the final black. Ollie Douglas also survived a scare with Jason Francis failing to get over the line to spring an upset. Scott Haynes was in superb form defeating Martin Wallace whilst Andy Vernon was pushed all the way against Neil Winkworth.

The Semi Finals saw Ollie Douglas in blistering form, easing past Chris Rice. Scott Haynes battled superbly to take out Andy Vernon.

The final was an unbelievable frame of snooker. Scott Haynes posted a 32 break to forge a lead, only for Ollie Douglas to compile a superb break of 52, missing an attempted double on the brown. With Scott 20 behind and needing all of the remaining balls, Ollie laid a fantastic snooker. Scott escaped brilliantly and laid a snooker in return. Ollie escaped the Snooker but left a pot on the Brown. Scott then held his nerve to mop up the remaining balls and become the Pot Black Champion 2013.

The 6 Red Championship 2013

The 6 Red Championship 2013 was contested on Sunday 27th January. This year saw a record number of entries to the Tournament with 42 players all taking part. The additional interest may have been due to the unique prize attached to the tournament, a Frame of Snooker against the 7 times world champion Stephen Hendry at the Crucible Exhibition on 18th May 2013.

The Last 64 saw some great matches with the stand out tie Chris Rice v Neil Herd. Chris ran out a 4-2 winner in a good encounter. Jonjo Sharker defeated Andy Bolter 4-2 whilst young Connor Curtis made his tournament debut, losing out 4-0 to Crucible No. 1 ranked snooker player Ollie Douglas. Sarah Middleton, Ali Daley, Pete Thomas, Norman Byng and Sean Munday were also early casualties.

The last 32 pitted 2 Pool greats against eachother. Duane Puttock was beaten 4-3 by Adam brown in an epic encounter. Dan Davey defeated Neil Winkworth, whilst Mike Mitchell rolled back the years to make short work of Dean Matthews. Nigel Day lost out to Newbury League player Mark Head, whilst Jonjo Sharkey, not content with eliminating one Crucible Club owner, then knocked out another in the shape of Lyndon Paxford.

The last 16 saw a re-match from the Open Championship with Craig Marsh up against Ollie Douglas. This time though the roles were reversed with Ollie coming out on top. Matt Ford defeated Jonjo Sharkey whilst Phil Simmons beat Scott Haynes in a very close encounter, Phil also posting a break of 60 along the way. Mike Mitchell fell to Aaron Watts, with Aaron showing he was in great form.

The Quarter finals were hotly contested. Chris Rice beat Ian Rose whilst Ollie Douglas overcame Aaron Watts. Matthew Challen lost out to Matt Ford and Phil Simmons put out Adam Brown.

The Semi finals saw Ollie Douglas play Chris Rice. Ollie eventually ran out the winner. The 2nd Semi saw Phil Simmons take on Matt Ford. Matt proving to be too strong in the end to make another tournament final at the Crucible.

The final pitted the best 2 Players in the Crucible Club against each other. Matt ford raced into a 3-1 lead before Ollie Douglas pulled him back t0 tie the match up at 3-3. In the deciding frame Ollie made a break of 29 and missed in the balls. Matt then pulled back. After a tinely fluke on the Blue and then the Pink, Matt then potted the final black to win the 2013 6 Red Championship and secure a frame against Stephen Hendry.

The Open Championship 2012

The Crucible Club 2012 Open Championship was contested on 28th October. The tournament is a straight knock out format but with a twist. There are no seedings and every round is a random draw!

19 players entered and the opening rounds threw up some big games. Ian Rose took on Scott Haynes in a tight game with Ian coming through 3-1. Robbie Self toppled local legend Tony Powell 3-2, whilst Andy Seymour was defeated 3-0 by Matt Ford. Reading league rivalry pitted Andy Bolter against Richard Piner, with Andy coming through 3-2 in a tight game. Jonjo Sharkey showed fine form in beating Robbie Self 3-0, as did Chris Rice in defeating Cris Ball 3-0. Newbury League Player Paul Davis fought hard but could not match the class on Andy Vernon. There was also a Tournament debut from Shaun Irlam but unfortunately Chris Rice was too strong. In the final 2nd Round match, Craig Marsh took out a superb 50 break in the deciding frame to defeat reigning Open Champion and Crucible club number one Ollie Douglas.

The quarter finals also saw some great matches. Craig Marsh lost 3-2 to Andy Vernon after going 2-0 up for the 2nd consecutive tournament. Neil Winkworth beat Andy Bolter and Matt Ford Beat Ian Rose, both a 3-0 score line. In the final match Chris Rice was in superb form to beat the every improving Jonjo Sharkey.

The Semi Finals saw Matt Ford dominate against Andy Vernon and run out a 3-0 winner. Meanwhile Neil Winkworth pipped Chris Rice in a tight mate to make it to the final.

Neil Winkworth started the final in blistering fashion with a 70 break in the opening frame. Matt Ford then responded and took control of the match opening up a 3-1 lead. Neil then took the next frame before Matt clinched the Match 4-2 along with the Title of Crucible Club Open Champion 2012.
